Akita
Akita is at the Sea of Japan and is in the Tohoku Region, the northern prefecture on the main island of Honshu. Shirakami-Sanchi crossing into both Aomori and Akita prefectures is a massive 130,000-hectare beech forest area. It’s the largest in the world. 16, 971-hectare beech forest of the region is registered as a World Heritage Site. You don’t need to be a history buff to enjoy Kakunodate, which has well preserved and fascinating Samurai culture. Akita is also known for Akita dogs, one of the giant breeds of dogs indigenous to Japan. You might have heard of the faithful dog, Hachiko. There are two statues of him in Tokyo, but you can meet real Akita dogs in Akita. The Capitol is Akita City.
