The Magic of Udo Jingu in Miyazaki City

Writer's picture: Yumi KYumi K

Perched on the stunning Cape Udo and surrounded by the crashing waves of the Pacific, Udo Jingu Shrine is a gem in Miyazaki that you won’t want to miss. This vibrant, vermillion-painted shrine is uniquely set inside a cave, creating a mystical and serene atmosphere that feels like stepping into another world.

A Shrine Like No Other

Tucked within a natural cave, the shrine’s vivid vermillion tones contrast beautifully with the surrounding rocky cliffs and the deep blues of the ocean. It’s a picture-perfect spot that nature lovers and photographers will adore. Standing there, with the waves pounding against jagged reefs below, you can feel the powerful bond between this sacred place and the natural world around it.

Try Your Luck with the Turtle Stone

Looking for a little fun? Legend says that if you throw a small stone into the “turtle stone”—a square hole in a rock below the cape—your wish will come true! Men throw with their left hand, women with their right. It’s an enjoyable challenge and a great way to connect with local traditions.

Dive into the Culture and History

  • Shanshan Horse Tradition: Back in the day, newlyweds from Miyazaki would visit Udo Jingu as part of their honeymoon. The bride rode a beautifully decorated horse, while the groom guided it. The horse’s jingling bells gave this charming tradition its name.

  • March Shanshan Badochu National Tournament: This annual event showcases the region’s unique cultural heritage and is a must-see if you’re in the area in March.

  • Udo Mountain Hachozaka: Up for an adventure? Climb the 715 stone steps leading to the shrine. The staircase, built by a dedicated nun, offers stunning views and a rewarding sense of accomplishment.

  • Udo-yama Mogaibutsu: Don’t miss the intricately carved Buddhist statues from the 18th century, a testament to exceptional artistry.

Recognized for Its Scenic Beauty

In 2017, Udo was designated a National Scenic Beauty Site, highlighting its significance as one of Japan’s most picturesque and culturally rich locations. If you ever visit Miyazaki, don't miss it!
